Conceived at once as a theoretical introduction and a practical guide for conductors, composers, instrumentalists, and music teachers, The Art of Conduction (published posthumously in English in 2017 as The Art of Conduction – A Conduction® Workbook and now translated into Italian) theorizes and illustrates “Conduction”: the practice of conducted improvisation – with or without written parts – that Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris devised and refined over the course of his musical career, and which is presented here comprehensively from the signs and gestures that underlie it.
To contextualize the extensive section devoted to the gestural “lexicon” of Conduction as well as Morris’s reflections introducing it, the volume opens with a number of short critical, musicological and biographical texts on the master’s work, then offers practical pointers for conductors and teachers interested in using Conduction with their ensembles.
Finally, a chronology and discography of the Conductions that the U.S. conductor made between 1985 and 2011, with details on the musicians who participated and the currently available recordings, accompany the work alongside fragments from Morris’s notebooks.
