(un)common threads

(un)common thread, a new album from violinist Ariana Kim on Saffron Soul – the new classical music imprint of Tiger Turn Records – explores musical improvisation through two seemingly disparate lenses: 18th-century violin sonatas with fortepiano and world folk music with percussion. Though a gut-stringed violin paired with a historical keyboard may seem like a distant relative to a steel-stringed violin grooving with a frame drum, Kim draws an uncommon thread – or perhaps more common thread than one might realize – between the two.

From diving deeply into the performance practice of the late 18th and early 19th centuries – exploring embellishments, flexibility in timing, ornamentation, and improvising within the Classical idiom – Kim and fortepianist Moseley look back to two of the greatest original improvisors: Mozart and Beethoven. When seen as “the ink”, Mozart and Beethoven left us with scores that can feel like icons of unchangeable perfection. And, when one unshackles from that invariability – remembering the freedom with which these composers performed themselves – a new perspective of flexibility, spontaneity, and adventure can be found in two of the masterpieces of the violin + piano literature: Mozart’s Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 454 and Beethoven’s Sonata in E- flat Major, Op. 12 No. 3.

Serving as a bridge between the two “sides” of the album is a Carnatic improvisation – one of two pieces where Kim plays solo – offering a meditation from her studies in India; with the second solo work, she makes her debut as a recorded composer, taking that (un)common thread into the space of a vintage amp and looper pedal. With a leap into the 21st century and staging posts on the other side of the globe, Kim and percussionist-composer Shanahan present the world premiere recording of three original compositions by Shanahan, inspired by his roots in folk music from India, the Middle East, and West Africa. Each work explores the relationship between rhythmic groove and melody, leaving space for improvised solos atop looping cycles of 5, inviting motivic and harmonic development to unfurl. Rounding out the album are two folk tunes from Macedonia and Bulgaria, exploring time signatures of 7 and 13 with a sorrowful lament and an explosive dance, respectively – each lending their form to moments of improvisation for both instruments within those languages.

[808,266],"event_type_2":[767
post-61043","ajde_events","type-ajde_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","event_location-sala-amati-en","event_type-presentation","event_type-strings-en","event_type_2-sunday-4
["GET
