Interview with Juliana Farha

by Lucrezia Liberati

“No satisfaction has been greater for us than seeing a musician who was about to stop playing and, thanks to our help, did not give up.” This is the story of Kun Shoulder Rest, a family-run company at the forefront of the production of shoulder rests for string instruments since 1972. The product, patented in Canada by the Czechoslovakian Joseph Kun, has become an international brand and owes its success to the relationship it has been able to build with customers over years of research alongside musicians and its craftsmen.

We interviewed Juliana Farha, a Canadian born in 1966, director of Kun Shoulder Rest Canada and European representative, with whom we talked about the philosophy of their company, in view of their participation in Cremona Musica International Exhibitions and Festival, from 26 to 28 September 2025.

Kun Shoulder Rest supports musical projects with young musicians, both in Canada and abroad. Is there a connection between these activities and the development of new products?

Promoting music education is a fundamental part of our mission. Not only to train the musicians of the future, but also because we strongly believe that it represents an opportunity for social enterprise and development. We collaborated with the youngest when we introduced our brightly colored junior shoulder rests, designed for smaller instruments (half and three-quarters).

The projects we support embody the values of my family, which are also shared by everyone who works with us: we try to live them in the work environment, in the way we relate to our employees. The way we treat each other reflects our behavior in the world. It sounds like a cliché, but for us it is true and we try to live by it.

Innovation and tradition: how to reconcile them?

We could say that the history of the development of our products is similar to that of modern architecture: just as reinforced concrete has allowed us to construct new buildings and forms, certain materials and technologies influence what we can do.

When the company started, success was based on creating a quality product for as many people as possible. Today, however, musicians are much more attentive to their bodies and technology makes it easier to meet individual needs.

A standardized product can do its job well, but it is not enough for those who make music their job: customization becomes necessary. With this in mind we have conceived the Kun Seven, a shoulder rest that is entirely adaptable to the needs of each musician.

Let’s say goodbye with a souvenir from the last edition of Cremona Musica: can you tell us an anecdote that you like to remember?

Some people have told us that they have been using our shoulder rest for 20 years and do not want to change it because they have become attached to it. It may seem absurd for those who do not play the violin or viola, but there is an emotional relationship even with such a practical tool!

by Lucrezia Liberati “No satisfaction has been greater for us than seeing a musician who was about to stop playing and, thanks to our help, did not give up.” This is the story of Kun Shoulder Rest, a family-run company at the forefront of the production of shoulder rests for string instruments since 1972.
