Today, she combines her concert career with teaching at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute and is recognized as one of the greatest living violinists. She also founded Midori & Friends (New York, 1992) and Music Sharing (Japan, 2002), projects that support children and communities deprived of access to music education. A guest of the Cremona Musica International Exhibitions and Festival 2025, Midori will receive the Cremona Musica Award “Performance Strings” for her great technical mastery and the humanitarian commitment that has always characterized her life. The award ceremony is scheduled for September 26th at 5:15 pm in the Sala Stradivari.

What does it mean for you to receive the Performance Archi Award in Cremona, the city where your violin was built?

Cremona is part of my personal history. My violin, a 1734 Guarneri del Gesù, ex-Huberman, comes from this city, like other instruments I’ve played in the past. Receiving an award in the homeland of violin making is thrilling: I don’t see it as a celebration of the past, but as a stimulus for the future and an encouragement to continue, to explore the musical universe more deeply.

Alongside your concert activity, you’ve launched important social projects. How do you feel about this experience?
I started and remain involved in my non profit organizations and other projects, because I love to share music with others, especially with those who have limited or no access to the live performing arts, like music. At this point in my life, I am also grateful for what I have experienced. There is much that I learned, consciously or unconsciously, through these activities.

Looking to the future, what are your next artistic projects?

I love the standard repertoire just as much as modern and commissioned works. Each composer has a language of his or her own. Currently there are two works on the horizon that will be premiered – one by a young American composer, Che Buford, and another by Detlev Glanert. The Buford work is for violin and electronics and the Glanert is a concerto for two violins.

by Annarita Garganese Born in Osaka in 1971, Midori made her debut at a young age with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Zubin Mehta.
