Contemporary Sardinian Composers is a discographic project dedicated to showcasing today’s musical creativity through the sound experimentation of composers born in Sardinia. Some of them continue to live and work on the island, transforming their homeland into a true creative hub; others have taken their paths abroad – even to other continents – while some, after training experiences overseas, have returned to their hometowns. For all of them, Sardinia remains a vital source of inspiration.
The project offers a snapshot of a specific historical moment: a collection of “images” – figures and musical works – that embody our present. By mapping these voices and experiences, it invites reflection without assigning any folkloristic or identity-driven label.
The first volume, a double CD released by the historic Basel-based label Hat Hut Records under the artistic direction of producer Werner X. Uehlinger, features eight distinctive composers: Luciano Chessa, Riccardo Collu, Giuseppe D’Amico, Giovanna Dongu, Andrea Granitzio, Paolo Pastorino, Claudio Sanna, and Luca Sirigu. Among the highlights are Quadri di una città fantasma by Luciano Chessa – a chamber mystery for piano, blackboard, and three turntables, first published by Rai Trade in 2003 and inspired by the evocative places of Virginia City (Nevada) – and the first volume of Lyrical Sketch by Giuseppe D’Amico, composed in 2021 alongside his Tenth Symphony.
The second volume, also released by Hat Hut Records, introduces twenty additional composers, expanding the project to a total of twenty-eight and broadening its artistic spectrum even further.
At Cremona Musica, a special program will present a selection of these Sardinian voices in dialogue with two representative Italian composers: Paolo Ugoletti from Brescia and Gabrio Taglietti from Cremona. The centerpiece of the event will be a tribute to one of the greatest figures in music history and Cremona’s most celebrated composer:Claudio Monteverdi.
