Never before has a nation in the world had such a large number of progressive rock groups and such a pervasive development of the musical movement in social, cultural, and even political terms. Italian progressive rock is not a simple adaptation of a British model, nor a natural evolution of beat or singer-songwriter music: it is the synthesis of an entire musical and literary culture that, between the early 1969 and 1976 with the Parco Lambro concert, found in symphonic, lyrical, instrumental, introspective rock an ideal vehicle to express social tensions, generational anxieties and otherwise suffocated aesthetic ambitions.
