IL MAESTRO DEL MAESTRO. Giovanni Anfossi e Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
Giovanni Anfossi, a direct descendant of Pasquale Anfossi, studied music in his native Ancona and later at the Conservatory in Naples under the guidance of Giuseppe Martucci. From 1888 onwards, he devoted himself to teaching in Verona and Milan, establishing close ties with the upper middle classes and founding his own private school. His pupils included Luisa Baccara, Rina Gallo, Agostino Orizio and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.
How much did Benedetti Michelangeli owe to his teacher Giovanni Anfossi?
How did Benedetti Michelangeli become the Maestro par excellence?
These are crucial and far-reaching questions. Answers emerge from the study of Anfossi’s previously unpublished private archive, from the accounts of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli’s pupils, and from previously unknown photographic portraits that shed new light on the adolescent and young man at the very moment when his star began to rise.
