Interview with Claire Crausaz – JURA TONEWOOD

by Martina Gozzini

We’re delighted to welcome Jura Tonewood to the Acoustic Guitar Village in Cremona for the first time. Located in the Jura region of France, this artisanal workshop works exclusively with local woods that grow near the atelier and emphasizes the use of native woods in its guitar construction.

CLAIRE CRAUSAZ – JURA TONEWOOD

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your company? What is your main mission and field of activity?

Jura Tonewood is a small artisanal workshop specializing in the selection, cutting, and sale of tonewood for guitar making. We are based in Arbois, in the Jura region of France, where a wide variety of species grow that are well-suited for instrument making. The woods we supply travel only a short distance between the time they are cut and our workshop.

How does your work balance tradition and innovation? What does this dialogue mean to you, especially in the context of Cremona? In guitar making, exotic woods have taken on a major role. More local species, which were traditionally used before their arrival, have been somewhat neglected. For us, it is important to highlight and offer the diversity of woods that fully deserve their place in the making of acoustic guitars.

What will you be presenting this year at the Acoustic Guitar Village? Can you give us a preview of your participation? In Cremona, we will showcase a selection of our entire stock of tonewood, intended not only for acoustic, archtop, and electric guitars but also for bouzoukis, mandolins, ukuleles, and Weissenborns.
Among the species on display at our stand will be spruce, maple, walnut, ash, pear, linden, and more.
