Interview with Maestro Enrica Crippa

di Stefano Prinzivalli

Enrico Crippa, an academic background, but then passion takes over? Who is Enrico Crippa and what does he do?

Passion for music is the key to everything; without it, it would be truly difficult to continue.
I was born a musician and enthusiast, and my research led me to violin making at a very young age. I continued my studies, graduating from the Scuola di Liuteria Civica in Milan, and after various internships and jobs in the music industry, I opened my own workshop called “Sound City” in Piacenza. I followed my roots and slowly specialized in the restoration of historic vintage instruments produced from the early 1900s to the 1990s.
This has been my job for 15 years now and I would never go back.”

A meeting between tradition and innovation: what does this dialogue mean?

Innovation is a concept that has always fascinated me and is part of the social context of my generation; on the other hand, nostalgia for historical periods never experienced is also part of it.
Combining these two things isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible. Continuing these two parallel lines is instinctive for me; I just try not to force the intersection.

What will you present at the Electric Sound Village in Cremonamusica?

This year, I’ll have the pleasure of presenting a piece of research I’ve been pursuing for some time: the HAGA (Historic Authentication Guitar Archive) registry.

Thanks to the scientific and methodological support of the Arvedi Non-Invasive Diagnostics Laboratory of the University of Pavia, located within the Antonio Stradivari Violin Museum Foundation in Cremona (CR), I have been able to build, and continue to expand, an archive for research in the field of restoration and certification of the authenticity of vintage instruments. I believe this is the future; let’s hope for a revolution.
