Young pianists and unpublished performances, international soloists and round tables. The rich program of Cremona Musica is taking shape

by Maria Musti

«The 2024 edition of Cremona Musica will feature an unprecedented concentration of great pianists, and will open up further to the city thanks to the greater offer of events in the most important cultural venues in Cremona: the Teatro Ponchielli and the Museo del Violino». This is how Roberto Prosseda, artistic advisor of the Event, begins, underlining its not only commercial nature: the most important European fair dedicated to music is increasingly positioning itself as a cultural and artistic event.

Prosseda, takes care of Piano Experience the Show dedicated to pianos and keyboard instruments, Cremona Winds and Mondomusica, then mentions some of the names already confirmed their presence: among the most anticipated, the Irish flautist sir James Galway, who will receive the Cremona Musica Award for the Wind category, the violinist gipsy Roby Lakatos and the French-Cypriot pianist Cyprien Katsaris, who will participate in the round table dedicated to the French composer Charles-Valentin Alkane, will be part of the prestigious jury of the PianoLink International Competition for amateur pianists, chaired this year by Jean Marc Luisada. And in the coming weeks the presence of other prestigious guests will be announced.

As usual, the major piano manufacturers will be present, alongside their flagship models, musical moments entrusted to great performers and young people with outstanding talent. The Fazioli company, for example, returns to Cremona with a program of six concerts: among the most interesting names, the 23-year-old Elia Cecino, the first Italian to win the prestigious Iturbi competition in Valencia, and Young Sung Choi, born in 1993, gold medal at the Rina Sala Gallo in 2022. In the Yamaha-Bösendorfer program, however, a proposal of notable historical and documentary importance stands out: listening, thanks to the Disklavier model and its integrated playback system, to performances by important pianists of the past, recorded on rolls. Worth mentioning are the unpublished works by the Polish Raoul von Koczalski, rediscovered by the young Italian scholar Federico Foglizzo.

Another prestigious event, the evening dedicated to the Stauffer Academy, which will be attended by its historic teachers: Salvatore Accardo and Bruno Giuranna. Franco Petracchi, from October of this year, passes the baton to his student Alberto Bocini.

The section dedicated to violin making represents the true “root” of Cremona Musica; next to it, the hall dedicated to wind instruments is increasingly becoming another pillar of its strength. This is demonstrated, among others, by the presence of personalities such as Silvia Careddu, first flute of the Orchestre National de France since 2021, and Domenico Orlando, first oboe of the Leipzig Gewandhaus since 2009.

The event is scheduled for just over two months from now and the full calendar will be announced soon.
